Powered by FAVCY Sangeeth Sivan’s (nah, make that “The Deol trio’s vanity project”) Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 is a comedy that doesn’t make you laugh even once. Hell, barring a few dull attempts, it doesn’t even go for some cheeky fun with/at itself a la Dabangg, Tashan and (if the reviews are anything to go by) this very film’s predecessor which I haven’t seen.
It’s bored and it’s boring. There are several homages to Salman Khan and his brand of filmmaking, both current and that of the 90s.
The romance between Prem (Bobby Deol) and Suman (Neha Sharma) is triggered by their die-hard Salman Khan fandom. The film even makes insipid attempts at invoking today’s Salman Khan actioners with the choreography of its action scenes. There’s no denying that the sheer persona Salman Khan possesses and the chutzpah with which he carries it off does go perfectly with that brand of filmmaking, the only problem with those films is the laziness and poor sensibilities they are made with. Here, the film wants us to cheer and applaud when Bobby Deol tries to pull such sequences off, that lifeless thing which should’ve been banned instead of poor mannequins. This type of cinema is more about punchlines than about the director’s auteuristic touch but quite clearly, even the writers didn’t give a damn about whether their humour works for any type audience. We were about 20 people in the hall, and there wasn’t a single roar of laughter. How could there be one, when we’re expected to laugh and be amazed when a monkey named Einstein gets drunk and paints a supposed masterpiece of a painting.
Of course I wasn’t expecting another Dr. Strangelove, but this film is utterly deprived of any novelty. Not that it’s impossible to offer the audience something new while working within the confines of the loony Bollywood blockbuster filmmaking.
The early portions of Dabangg did it for me. Unlike Anees Bazmee and Sajid Khan films; Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 is mercifully free of racist, sexist or homophobic gags.
Imagine, they could’ve even made the monkey fart. Not that it isn’t made to dress up in a cheerleader-costume-type outfit and dance to Sheila Ki Jawaani, but still. But when that’s the only non-deprecating thing you can say about a film, something’s seriously wrong. The only time I laughed was when our villain Dude Ji (Anupam Kher) comes up with an impromptu couplet and his sidekick (played by Johnny Lever) marvels, “Ekdum instant bana lete hain.” It reminded me of Kanti Shah’s Mithun starrer Gunda, the “great bad films” genre-defining classic.
